Research suggests that being yourself at work may not improve your career

Thursday, April 19th, 2012

The Daily Telegraph reported that research has suggested that being yourself at work may not be the best idea for your career.

Scientists held a study that assessed levels of “authentic self expression” in 533 volunteers to see how far they opened up to people they interacted with socially. The results showed that participants were more likely to “be themselves” with partners, followed by friends and then parents. However, they were much less likely to show their true self to work colleagues.

Dr Oliver Robinson, from the University of Greenwich in London, said: “You hear self-help gurus say that the secret of happiness is ‘being yourself’ or ‘expressing your true feelings’, but that doesn’t seem to apply in the workplace…So in some circumstances, it may be that a polite smile or tactfully keeping quiet may be more conducive to your well-being than saying what you actually think and feel to work colleagues.

REC Claims Flexible Workforce is Way Forward

Tuesday, August 30th, 2011

The Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) has reported that flexible work is increasingly important for the economy and allows for the creation of a modern workforce.

A UK Business, Innovation and Skills department consultation looked into the rights of flexible working time, beyond part time workers, or those who work from home. Recruitment consultancies were highlighted as increasingly important for helping businesses create these modern employees who can balance work with education or parental roles easily.

Gillian Econopouly, Head of Policy at the REC, highlights the degree to which “temporary work is an invaluable way for jobseekers to enter the labour market” as it allows them the chance to gain experience and workplace skills. She later added that businesses and employees must work together “to adopt mutually beneficial working arrangements.”

Emerging Markets to Stimulate Clinical Trials Growth

Thursday, July 7th, 2011

Pharmatimes.com has reported that there will be a 50% increase in global clinical trials by 2015.

Companies moving to emerging markets and demand for services which provide late-stage development seem to be the main reasons for the worldwide increase. By 2015, global revenue for clinical trials is expected to exceed $32 billion. Richard Lang, a pharmaceutical industry analyst, believes contract research organisations will further benefit following strategic  negotiations with large pharmaceutical companies as more drug development is outsourced.

At the same time, increase in demand for specialist clinical trails will be beneficial for niche companies. Emerging markets such as India and China are expected to account for the majority of revenue growth, with China become the second largest market for pharmaceutical trials within ten years.

Permanent Jobs on the Rise in UK

Monday, July 4th, 2011

The Recruitment and Employment Confederation has reported that workforces are set to be added to over the next twelve months, which is good news for those in the scientific industry, including pharmaceutical and chemical businesses, as well as those seeking jobs in such industries.

Only 6% of employers predict they will have to make staff cutbacks in the next six months and 77% are planning to add to their staff over the coming twelve months.

The REC’s director of research, Roger Tweedy, has said “the picture is one of cautious optimism” and employers are seeking to assess the UK economy.
Though growth slowed in May, placements have continued to increase leading to a positive mid and long term outlook.
